Essential Geyser Safety: The Pressure Control Valve (PCV) 🛡️
Your geyser, or hot water cylinder, is a high-pressure vessel, and in South Africa, its correct installation is not just about convenience—it’s about life-saving safety. Every year, geyser explosions occur, which can be as destructive as a small bomb, causing severe damage to property and tragically, leading to injury or death. This catastrophic potential is why the Pressure Control Valve (PCV) is arguably the most critical component of your hot water system.

What is a PCV and Why is it Essential?
The PCV is a collection of safety devices that work together to prevent over-pressurization. The system typically includes a Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV), which lowers and regulates the incoming municipal water pressure to a safe operating level (commonly 400 kPa or 600 kPa) for your geyser.
Equally important is the Temperature and Pressure Relief (TPR) valve. This valve has a dual safety function: it monitors both the temperature and the pressure inside the geyser. If the water pressure or temperature becomes dangerously high—for instance, if the thermostat fails and the water overheats, creating steam—the TPR valve automatically opens. This releases the excessive hot water and steam, relieving the pressure and preventing the geyser from rupturing or exploding.

Your Compliance and Safety Check
South African National Standard SANS 10254 mandates that all geyser installations must be compliant, ensuring that the necessary safety valves are correctly installed and rated for your specific geyser. A constant, steady drip from the overflow pipe usually indicates a faulty PCV system that needs immediate professional attention, as its primary safety mechanism is compromised.
Never block the overflow or discharge pipe, as this is the emergency exit for dangerously over-pressured water. A functional PCV is a non-negotiable insurance for your home and family’s safety.
